I’m based in Lund, South Sweden. I make one-to-one performance, film and installation works, specifically focusing on immersive, multi-sensory and interactive methods, and often involving technology to enhance presence. In my artistic practice I mostly work by myself, alongside collaborations as a spatial audio designer, technology consultant and artistic consultant, with scientists, other artists, theatres, and cultural and commercial clients. I also teach and hold workshops on spatial audio practices from an artistic perspective at places such as Inter Arts Center in Malmö and Lund University.
How do you promote or produce one-to-one art?
By making projects that are on-to-one! All of my projects in the last 12 years have been one-to-one, so, by promoting my practice, I also promote one-to-one! I have also been director of the Mono Festival of One-to-One Performance that ran between 2016-19 in Lund, Sweden. Through Mono Festival, my colleague Paula Ludusan Gibe and I were able to highlight one-to-one works from high quality artists working in the form across Scandinavia and bring them to Southern Sweden. As well as promoting one-to-one locally through the festival itself we also had extensive global reach through our website: monofestival.se In terms of producing one-to-one, I am currently focused on my own artistic practice, so, my methods of production are based entirely on developing my own new and existing projects. Although conventional funding models are difficult when trying to fund one-to-one, I have found culture innovation funding to be supportive of the format, and creating collaborations based on my works has also been fruitful. Most venues are open to showing one-to-one work, although it often requires some different framing or “co-exhibition” type arrangements.
Lastly, even when working as a spatial audio designer on projects I also come back to a one-to-one approach to the audience and this is an important part of my client work as well. So the promotion of one-to-one art comes easily to me as it is an essential part of how I work and approach life.
What do you emphasize in your one-to-one work?
Presence and interrogating the artist/audience power dynamic. If someone has trust to take part in one of my works, I would like to respect that trust and make sure they feel safe and rewarded for their participation.
What is important for you to tell in this portal?
It is hard to put language onto one-to-one practice as it is so unique as to how projects are designed and land with each individual. One-to-one works are often more context- and experience-based and that tends to defy description. It is therefore perhaps also easier to explain my practice through my projects: timbishopartist.com
