Brief introduction of your organisation / collective
Where do you work? What do you do? What kind of members / artists / other workers do you have? Who do you connect and work with?
Reality Research Center (Todellisuuden tutkimuskeskus) is a Helsinki-based collective of artists with the shared aspiration to observe, question, and renew reality through performance. Founded in 2001, the Reality Research Center has played a pivotal role in establishing Performance and Live Art within the Finnish cultural landscape, carrying out more than 100 performance projects.
How do you promote or produce one-to-one art?
Performance is both our method of research and the artistic outcome. We believe that art expands the spectrum of reality. Most of our performances unfold beyond traditional art spaces, taking place in diverse settings such as forests, clubs, streets, virtual reality, parliament, and even people’s homes. These unconventional environments demand exceptional care for our audience. Over the years, we have developed various effective strategies for audience engagement, with many of our productions focusing on an audience of one and the shared reality that emerges between the performer and each participant.
What do you emphasize in your one-to-one work?
The audiences and their experience are central to our work, which is why we often refer to them not just as spectators, but as experiencers, participants, or even co-authors. In our one-to-one works we emphasize care for the participant and the exploration of reality through performance.
